Getting Your New York Driving License

When moving to New York from another state you will have to get a new driver’s license.

To get a New York driver’s license you will have to go to the department of motor vehicles office and apply in person. You can make an appointment in advance with the NY DMV office so you will not have to wait once you get to the office. 

Currently, you cannot apply for a change of address online or over the phone as a new resident.

Before leaving for the DMV you must gather the following documents:

  • An application for a New York driver’s license, permit, or non-driver ID card. You can fill it out in advance to save yourself some time.
  • Your license from the previous state you were living in. It must be valid or expired for no more than 24 months. It should also be issued at least 6 months before your move to New York State.
  • Your Proof Identity. This will include your U.S birth certificate, US passport, US military photo ID, or certificate of citizenship.

The application fee for a New York driver’s license fee is $65. However, it will be $75 for the following areas:

  • Bronx
  • Kings (Brooklyn)
  • New York (Manhattan)
  • Queens
  • Richmond (Staten Island)
  • Dutchess

  • Putnam

No, you will not be required to give a driving test, however, you will have to pass a vision test before you get your new license.

You should apply for a driver’s license within the first 30 days of moving to New York.

Within What Time Frame Should I Update My Vehicles Registration?

You should update the registration of your vehicle within 30 days of moving to NYC.

Updating Your Vehicles Registration After Moving To New York

To get the registration updated you will have to go to the New York DMV. You can make an appointment and bring your car with the following documents.

  • Original title, or other proof of ownership
  • Proof of identification (driver’s license, permit, non-driver ID card, etc.)
  • Proof of insurance
  • Completed Vehicle Registration Application
  • Payment for fees and taxes (or Proof of Exemption)

The registration fee will depend on the size of your vehicle and where you have shifted to in New York. It can include charges such as sales tax, registration transfer fee, title certificate fee, vehicle use tax, and the actual registration fee. You can also estimate the total fee by visiting the NY DMV website. 

For People Moving Within New York

People moving within New York State will only have 10 days to update their address after moving. They can apply for the DMV change of address form online, however, you must have an NY.gov ID number to apply online. If you do not have an NY.gov ID number you can apply through the below-given methods:

  • Visit the New York DMV office near you and fill out a DMV change of address form in person. 
  • Fill out a form by mail. You can print and fill the New York Change of Address Form and then mail it to the License Production Bureau.

You will receive your license in 4-6 weeks.

When moving within New York state you are not required to get a new driver’s license. The whole change of address will cost you $17.50 for an updated driver’s license with your new address and $8 for a non-driver ID card.

To change your address for your vehicle’s registration, you will need:
