Hot Tub Movers

Moving Prep

When moving your house, you will definitely come across a piece of furniture, sanitary ware, or item that will be extremely difficult to transport. You will soon realize you require proper planning and the right supplies to be able to move it.

One such thing is a hot tub. An average-sized hot tub weighs around 900 pounds and it will require heavy lifting to move it anywhere. Also hot tubs are not easy to dismantle and reassemble as they consist of several parts and pieces that need to be carefully protected during transport.

The recommended approach is to hire a professional moving company to move it but if you cannot then you should follow these simple steps to move a hot tub.

Finding The Right Moving Supplies

It is important to gather all important and necessary moving supplies before you can start to move your hot tub. Here is the list of items you should get hold off:

  • Moving straps
  • Two furniture dollies
  • Plywood pieces
  • Cleaning supplies

Most of the dollies available for rental are capable of holding up to 800 pounds.

Renting A Moving Truck

Moving a hot tub will require you to rent a moving truck. The truck should be large enough to hold the hot tub. The general rule of thumb is to find a truck that is at least 15 feet long.

You should also measure the dimensions of your hot tub and then rent a truck that can fit it inside. Make sure that the truck should have a loading ramp to make the move easier.

There are plenty of moving companies that offer trucks for rental to choose from when moving your hot tub.

Finding A Helping Hand

To move a hot tub will require you to have at least 3 more people. Hot tubs are extremely heavy and delicate objects. You can ask friends and family members to assist you with the move but if you are not able to find any free help you can hire labor-only movers.

The recommended method is to have 6 people to assist with the heavy lifting. Keep in mind that a hot tub is very heavy for a single person to move so you should never try to move it by yourself.

Evaluating The Surroundings

It is important to consider the location of your hot tub before you can start moving it. You must consider if the hot tub is in a tight spot, whether it is on the ground level or an upper floor. You should also think about whether moving the hot tub will damage the landscaping or not.

Disconnecting The Electrical Connections Of Hot Tub

Before you can move your hot tub, you will need to disconnect all the electrical connections. You will need to be extremely careful when handling electrical connections. Make sure that you do not leave any cords unsecured and dangling. You can also place the cords in watertight plastic bags.

Drain Water From The Hot Tub

Draining a hot tub is not as easy as it seems. If your hot tub is switched in your yard, draining it can damage your landscaping. You should also refer to the manufacturer’s instructions to drain it correctly.

You can use a pump or a garden hose to drain the water out of your tub. You can drain the water into a street gutter because draining large quantities of water in your house drainage line can cause overflow.

Once you have successfully drained your hot tub you should clean it. You can use an all-purpose cleaner to wipe the surface and remove any residues of chemicals.

Planning The Route

Your old and new yard will definitely have some obstacles and barriers that can keep you from transporting the hot tub. It can be a small passageway, a flight of stairs, or a narrow gate. Therefore you should devise a plan to navigate these stumbling blocks.

You can either move the hot tub from the back of the house or the front. Figuring it all out can help you to be ready for the moving day. It will also help you to know where the moving truck should be positioned.

Using Plywood Pieces To Level The Tub

Since hot tubs do not have an even base they can tumble when placed on the furniture dolly. Therefore you should place plywood pieces underneath the hot tub to create a smooth, flat surface for moving the hot tub.

This will also make it easier for you to place the furniture dollies under the tub.

Placing The Hot Tub Onto The Dollies

If your planned moving path leading to the moving truck is large and open you will not need to turn the hot tub on its side. But if the path is narrow you can carefully turn the hot tub on its side with the assistance of helpers.

Once your hot tub is on its side, you can slide a dolly underneath the front and back ends of the hot tub. You should make sure that the hot tub is firmly positioned on the two dollies.

Use moving straps to secure the hot tub onto the furniture dollies. While moving the hot tub to the moving truck, you and your friends should keep holding the hot tub on all sides.

Moving The Hot Tub On The Truck

You should move the furniture dollies with extreme care towards the moving truck. When moving the hot tub onto the loading ramp, at least four people should be at the lower end to ensure that the dollies do not roll off the ramp.

One person should be inside the truck to guide the hot tub into the storage. You should transport the hot tub while placed onto the dollies so it is easy to unload and move to the new position in your new home.

Remember to secure the dollies inside the truck with moving straps so they do not move during transit.
